Email and mailing lists

Discourse is not a mailing list. But there are many valid use cases for mailing lists. Consequently Discourse supports most of the functions of traditional mailing lists as well as being a modern and advanced web forum.

I have enabled mailing list functionality for all new users.

You will receive emails for all posts, just like a normal mailing list. You can reply to posts in topics directly from your mailer. [Please note that the reply-to address must indicate the domain If it shows anything else, contact me because it won’t work.]

Discourse in its support of a mailing list model also allows the creation of new topics initiated by email. To do this send an email to:

The mail subject becomes the topic name. By default email initiated posts go the the General category, and that cannot be changed. [It’s because mailing lists that are pure email don’t normally support categorization inbound.]
