Marco Tiella, 1930-2024

As announced yesterday by Claudio Canevari to CIMCIM-L:

Marco Tiella died [on 22 April 0224] in his home in Rovereto, at the age of 94, surrounded by the affection of his family, after a long period of suffering. Marco was a pioneer and a great scholar in our field, a mentor to many.

An architect by initial profession, Marco was central to the foundation in 1978 of the Civica Scuola di Liuteria del Comune di Milano, where he extended a warm welcome when I visited in 1985. He made the first modern reconstruction of Nicola Vicentino’s archicembalo, and his books, L’officina di Orfeo: tecnologia e pratica degli strumenti musicali (Il Cardo, 1995) and, with Tiziano Zanisi, Contributi allo studio del restauro degli strumenti musicali (Editrice Turris, 1990) are important landmarks.

A central figure in the study of the Italian Renaissance keyboard music, in particular of course the ETS31 of Vicentino and the corresponding Trasuntino keyboard.
May he rest in piece.
